The Beat – High Level 4 (57)
This piece shows a high level of excellence in the creative use of technical skills overall. Shots are varied, well framed and appropriate throughout the product. Mise-en-scène has been carefully considered across the images and images have been manipulated with a high level of finish where appropriate (e.g. the contents page). Use of language and register is considered and accurate. Images and text are well integrated throughout the piece although some of the graphic elements are less successful. Piece demonstrates a high level of understanding of conventions across the product: consistent and effective application of a house style although the contents page and the DPS are a little spacey at times. Fonts are generally used well, although there are minor discrepancies in the font used for the band’s name and the title of the magazine on the contents page and DPS. Excellent and appropriate use of ICT
PM – Level 3/4 border (47/48)
The piece shows a high level of proficiency/low level of excellence in the creative use of technical skills. Images are well-framed for the most part. There is a variety of images but the majority are mid-shots. Material is appropriate to task and mise-en-scène has been considered although Polaroid/black and white effects are questionable in their success. Images well manipulated for the DPS. Cover image has obviously been reversed. A few inaccuracies in language although register seems appropriate. Integration of text/image and understanding of conventions successful for cover and contents pages, less so for the DPS (lack of grid structure). Fonts used well but not consistently throughout product. Strong use of ICT.
Muse – Mid Level 3 (41)
A solid level of proficiency shown in the creative use of technical skills. Images are mostly well-framed and there is some variety of shot distance. Most of the images are appropriate although the image on the contents page is noticeably the weakest in terms of appropriateness and mise-en-scène (too dark). Some of the manipulation is a little clumsy, e.g. the guitar in the cover star’s eye. Some inaccuracies in language and register across the product. Integration of text and image shows some skill but some of the text in the DPS can’t be read against the background. DPS most successful in terms of using conventions (although over-texty and columns uneven) and some attempt to use a house style palette across product. Some attempt to use font but it is inconsistent and doesn’t work on the contents page. ICT used appropriately.
Music King – Low Level 3 (36)
This piece shows a low level of proficiency in the creative use of technical skills. Images are well framed and manipulated but most of them are mid-shot and they all look very similar apart from the image of the female, the appropriateness of which is questionable. Mise-en-scène effective for the most part. Inaccuracies of language and register throughout product. Illustration and text most successfully integrated on the DPS. Some understanding of conventions evident in the cover page and the DPS but the contents page is weaker. Some attempt to use a house style palette and font throughout product. Fonts over-large on cover and contents pages. ICT has been used appropriately.
